It’s kind of a funny story as to how this little animal skull came into my possession. While on a walk, one of my dogs dug it up (and seemed to look very proud over his lucky find)! I believe it to be the bone of a black or fox squirrel. Who knows how long it was buried, but enough of it was still intact to make it worth cleaning.
Upon doing some research, there were several things I did to get the skull sanitized. There was plenty of dirt on it from being buried, so I initially ran it under warm water to remove the biggest clumps. I then placed it in a disposable plastic cup filled with hydrogen peroxide and covered the lid with saran wrap; leaving it to soak for nearly a week. Doing that lifted a lot of the grime, but there was still some more to clean off. The final thing I used was a bucket of warm water mixed with dish soap and a toothbrush to gently scrub off the last of the dirt.
I’m certainly not an expert when it comes to cleaning animal bones, but I’m happy with the result of my first attempt. Others say that you can bleach the bone to make it whiter, but I rather like keeping its natural color. I now display the skull as decoration beside the mini cactus plant in my room. ^-^
Please share any of your own bone discoveries or cleaning method suggestions! Until next time,
